Stages of the Loc Journey

Throughout the process of the loc journey there are 3 key components that are required:

  • Patience

  • Maintenance

  • and most importantly LOVE.

The Five (5) Stages:

  • Baby

  • Budding

  • Teenage

  • Mature

  • Rooted

The Baby Stage

The Baby Stage

Done in diamond parts

  • The recommended starter loc method is the Comb Coil.

  • Typically, it lasts for 3-6 months.

  • The first retwist usually occurs between 6-8 weeks after the initial loc installation.

  • It is recommended that you don’t wash or get your hair wet during that time period.

  • We understand that you may experience some uncomfortable itching, however, we have products that we recommend to help.

The Budding Stage

  • Usually occurs roughly 6-12 months into your loc journey.

  • This is when you’ll start to realize that your hair doesn’t unravel when you wash it and you will see your new growth, which will look a bit fuzzy and fluffy, don’t worry it’s pretty normal.

  • At this point, you’ll want to maintain a retwisting schedule with your Loctician.

  • This will help you keep your original partings and help maintain the style of your locs.

  • We recommend a retwist every 6-8 weeks.

The Teenage Stage

  • Usually occurs 12-18 months into your journey.

  • This is when you will be able to be more versatile with your locs, but be mindful of any heavy creamy products in your locs as they'll create a build-up that we don’t want.

The Mature Stage

  • You’ll experience the Mature Stage of your locs journey within 15-18 months.

  • At this point, your locs are more cylindrical in shape and you will be able to stretch your retwist wait time if desired your locs will have taken a nice firm shape and potentially require less maintenance.

The Rooted Stage

  • The final locs stage of your loc journey is known as the Rooted Stage, some folks refer to it as the "Adult Stage", which occurs anywhere from 2 years+ which by this time is safe to say your hair is officially loc'd.

  • However, remember not to get too complacent and leave your locs without properly maintaining, cleansing, and moisturizing them.

Give love to your crown regardless of the stage you’re at, your locs will love you back.
